Hornswoggled

[Music in my ears upon waking: “Sail On, Sailor”, The Beach Boys, 1973
“I sailed an ocean, unsettled ocean
Through restful waters and deep commotion
Often frightened, unenlightened
Sail on, sail on, sailor”]

Feeling very unrested, frazzled, with danger signals of runaway technology running through my head. Feeling as though what we have made – in particular, AI and things like ChatGPT have run amok, they have become “berserkers”. What would make me even think of that word?

Walking Luke in the cold semi-darkness, I can’t seem to shake the feelings of unease about so many things, when the Lord says,

Yes, your senses are working well, but you have been hornswoggled.

I knew two things right away: (1) He was speaking to all of us, not just me, and (2) Much of what we are “seeing” and “hearing” is something like ‘sleight-of-hand’. I had to wait to get back home before looking up that word; here it is:
